Now, you can do both. Exotic Hardwoods & Veneers, an Oakland company, has received Scientific Certification Systems’ chain-of-custody certification (SCS-COC-00896).
Scientific Certification Systems is a third-party provider of certification, auditing and testing services and standards, and includes the Forestry Stewardship Council, which certifies forests, companies and their products as to their sustainable practices and qualities. (See a PDF list of certified companies or a list of forests FSC has determined are "well-managed.")
The "chain of custody" verbiage means that from the growing of the tree to the final product you might purchase, the entire process has been scrutinized for sustainability.
Exotic Hardwoods & Veneers’ certified products include bird’s-eye maple, cherry (pictured), red oak, white pine, red birch and white birch.
And as the lumber industry likes to point out, in a responsibly managed forest, wood is a renewable resource.
