Federal Tax Credits for Consumer Energy Efficiency

ENERGY STAR distinguishes energy efficient products which may cost more to purchase than standard models, but will pay you back in lower energy bills within a reasonable amount of time, even without a tax credit.  Not all ENERGY STAR certified products qualify for a tax credit.   How do I apply for a Federal Tax Credit?

2015 Federal Tax Credits

Tax Credit:  30% or cost with no upper limit
Expires:  December 31, 2016
Details:  Existing homes and new construction qualify.  Both principal residences and second homes qualify. Rentals do not qualify.
          Geothermal Heat Pumps
          Small Wind Turbines (Residential)
          Solar Energy Systems
Tax Credit:  Credit Details:  30% of the cost, up to $500 per .5 KW of power capacity.
Expires:  December 31, 2016
Details:  Existing homes and new construction qualify.  Must be your principal residence.  Rental homes and second homes do not qualify.
          Fuel Cells (Residential Fuel Cell and Microturbine System)
