Studio City kitchen shop wins national design competition

Nkbakitchen1Imagine a 1950s house with a brick-lined kitchen. Now imagine that a prominent attorney owns the house and wants to create a suitable kitchen in which to get geared up for the day. You might be imagining this maple and granite kitchen, which won a 2007 first-place award from the National Kitchen and Bath Assn. The kitchen was designed by DeWitt Talmadge Beall of DeWitt Designer Kitchens in Studio City, with Hye Won Lee as co-designer.

What I love: The sage-green glass backsplash, dark green granite counters, dramatically long European-style pulls, giant skylight and the great big TV.

Nkbakitchen2Read the design statement:

In remodeling this brick-lined 1950s kitchen, the design concept was developed along the lines of a movie. In this movie, there is one star and everything else is the supporting cast. The client, a high-powered attorney on the go, desired a favorite spot to enjoy breakfast while watching the news before leaving for a long day's work.

The star is the curved café counter, defined by its dynamic triangular sides that extend sculpturally into the space. The custom-made piece is veneered in Mappa Burl. It is topped with thick glass, raised to bar level and supported by stainless-steel cylinders, allowing the user to see through to the island counter below. The counter is lighted by three pendants, recessed low-voltage lighting and a skylight that floods the space with natural light. The kitchen also features natural-maple sequence-matched cabinetry, textured black-green granite countertops and a sheer glass backsplash.

In the floor planning, space was borrowed from the adjacent laundry room, and small windows were eliminated to address all the storage needs in the kitchen. The only material left from the old kitchen was a small part of the former brick wall, which was painted white for a sharp, updated look.

  1. I think it’s very cool , some great ideas here – Congratulations!

  2. I couldn’t help but notice that the chair/tabletop does not face the TV.
