Contractors at Home: What Do They Know?

Plaskoffporch_2Are you overwhelmed, confused, paralyzed with indecision? It sounds like you’re trying to make selections for your remodel.

For instance, should you select Andersen windows for the brand recognition? Or Marvin, which are good for custom projects? Or Milgard because they’re not too expensive and are good quality? Or Jeld-Wen because of the myriad choices? Or Pella because there are Pella window stores? Or another brand?

Even more confused?

Check out this survey at Professional Builder magazine where several contractors reveal the products they decided on for their own homes.

What do you notice?

Here’s what: There’s no consensus! From windows to siding to counter tops to fixtures, each builder chose, almost without exception, a different product. So are these products so different? Is one superior? Or is it all based on personal preference? Or chance?

I say relax, make your best guess, and then get on with it!

I plan to remodel my home as soon as my plans get approved. I’ve heard nothing but horror stories re: contractors so I’ve decided to be my own General Contractor. What type of advice can you give me? I’d like to know the DO’s and DONT’S.
