To me, the “idea” of stainless steel cabinets is not a good idea. I imagine beat up stainless steel cabinets in a high school science lab. It sounds noisy and finger print-smeared and utterly without charm.
But in the kitchen remodel of this mid-century modern home (as reported in Dwell), the cabinets are actually extremely appealing.
For one thing, this stainless steel is brushed, giving it a soft look that will likely not pick up finger prints.
And it brightens up the place. Anytime you have reflective surfaces with a lot of natural light, you double the pleasure.
Mostly, though, I believe it is the exposed wood in the house that makes it work. Check out that hefty post, the wood ceiling and the window frames. All of those together bring a warmth and naturalness that successfully counteract the steel’s internet coldness.
I give this remodel an A. The one thing that would have earned it an A+ is a super cool refrigerator with a glass door, specifically the economically priced Frigidaire FCGM201RFB Commercial 19.7 Cu. Ft. Stainless Steel Refrigerator — Energy Star.
