What is the first step in planning a remodeling or renovation project?

The first step is to develop an idea of what you want to do with the remodeling of your home. Write a prioritized list of your needs and wants. My house is older than my father's, so I think it would be really good to remodel it. It helped me a lot when you said that you should set aside at least 10 percent of your project budget for unexpected expenses.

Thank you so much for all the home remodeling tips. Fortunately, we've worked with many Central Ohio homeowners on all of their home renovation projects, and we know how many details are needed to do a complete home renovation right. We love to plan, design and build the renovations our clients dream of, and over the years, we have put together a general checklist for all home renovations to help our clients better understand the process. Outline your vision as you decide what your renovation wants and needs are.

You should also do research in your neighborhood to determine which projects would be a good return on investment and which would be less valuable to you in the long term. And when making your list, prioritize your wants and needs. Having a detailed list of your wishes and what will have the greatest impact on your life at home will allow you to more easily decide the best way to allocate your money, as well as the best way to move forward in case any surprises arise in the process. Kitchen and bathroom remodels add value to your home, but they cost a lot of money and can take longer to complete.

Doing a kitchen remodel, for example, will leave you without a usable kitchen until the project is complete. For example, if you buy top-of-the-line appliances, floors, countertops, and cabinets for your kitchen remodel and it's far superior to what other homes in the neighborhood have, they may not return it to you your money.
